Bout of Books: Tuesday

Today was my first fast day (I've started the 5:2 in an attempt to get healthy again), which, much to my surprise worked really well for a readathon day. I was so distracted by the books that the fact my stomach was attempting to digest itself did not (always) register with me. Books make an excellent distraction.

Number of pages read: 30% kindle, 50 pages (I think)

Number of books finished: 2 (technically)
Books read from: It's in the Box, The Lie, Assassin's Mark

I finished 2 books today *victory dance*! The Lie by Helen Dunmore was completely brilliant and, when I've finished processing it, I will be cracking on with reviewing it and trying to persuade everyone to read it. I also finished a really short novella/short story from LitBits called It's in the Box by Jack D'Aragon. At only about 16 pages, this was perfect for my tube ride home and I'll be talking more about LitBits soon (genius idea).

How was your Tuesday?

  1. Loads of people at work have been getting starting the 5:2 diet this January but I just completely lack the willpower! I prefer to dillude myself into thinking that because I run I must have a certain degree of healthiness? You should get on using that dillusion too - it's much more fun than being hungry :) Plus, I get cranky when I get hungry so me not eating for 2 days of the week is really no good to anybody, especially Andy (who I live with and suffers enough with all of the books that surround him, I always figure). See how hard I have worked to convince myself that it's ok for me to just eat? Hard.

ANYway, The Lie. I have it on my Kindle at the moment because I got approved for it on NetGalley. If you say that it's brilliant, I'm sold! I'm reading The Bone Season at the moment and it isn't *quite* what I expected and I'm a bit ambivalent about it so it's good to know that I can look forward to The Lie!

    1. My willpower is shocking. I'm not managing to stick to the 500 calories yet, though I'm determined to get there. I'm really struggling with my running at the moment (dodgy leg) so I don't feel healthy at all so I can't even delude myself! But yes, hungry me is a state - everyone in my office keeps offering me food and someone is going to get a stern word in a minute.

Read it! I got it from NetGalley too (jumped to request it the minute I saw it) and it is so so so good. I get a bit worried about WW1 books because they can often fall into cliche but this was original and brilliant. I hope The Bone Season picks up - I have heard good things about it though I'm not sure it's my cup of tea.

  3. Is it odd that I would like to take a peek into another person's Kindle? *attempts to zoom in*

I had to check out 5:2 diet, it certainly looks like something I've never seen before... It must take a whole lot self discipline! I could not go without optimal food intake for even a day - I mean I could but then I feel sorry for everyone around me, really... I wish you good luck, this is definitely not the worst looking diet out there!

    1. I'm exactly the same! You should see me on the tube trying to read everyone's screens...

Definitely self-discipline! But hopefully it'll get easier once I start to feel the affects. I'm just feeling so unhealthy at the moment (for someone who is obsessed with health) so I'm hoping this will sort me out.

  4. Sounds like you had a productive Tuesday!
My Dad did the 5:2 diet, he lost a lot initially but then he started going overboard on the days that he could eat and it all went downhill from there...

    1. I think that's the challenge. I'm struggling at the moment but having only done two days and being the sort of obsessive person who has to eat three meals a day, I'm still feeling positive.

  5. The Lie sounds interesting; it didn't have any reviews at Amazon so I'll look for your review when you get to it.

  6. I did the 5:2 for a bit last summer (think it's easier to do when hot and you can drink gallons of water). Have you made cauliflower rice yet? It's actually quite amazing and means you can have a big plate of food for dinner even if it's a fast day. I also recommend low fat chicken broth. I might try it again once all the bad xmas food is used up.

    1. Yes I'm thinking the summer would be easier - I need the extra padding in winter (although not this much padding). Cauliflower rice sounds amazing, I will check it out!
