Sweater Weather | Slippers | Cosy Blankets | Books | Crisp morning runs | Hot tea | Crumpets
Autumn is my favourite season. As the nights slowly creep in, the trees change colour, and the morning chill becomes more pronounced, I often find my mood shifting. Although I think winter is more commonly thought of as the cosiest season, I think it is Autumn which carries that mantle. There is something about the change from hot, muggy days to cooler, crisp days that makes me want to snuggle under a blanket with a hot tea and a good book. As much as I love to be able to read outside in the sun, nothing beats a comfy sofa and a fluffy blanket.
When Autumn comes I am usually in the mood for cleaning, changing and re-organising things in my life and in the home. So far this month I have sorted out my clothes (and recycled a ridiculously large amount), scrubbed the fridge and rearranged our sitting room. Next up on the agenda is to rearrange my bedroom to hopefully be able to squeeze in a desk. I'm also going to attack my bookshelves, which have grown slightly unmanageable of late. I'm going back to Somerset next week for some r'n'r in the country so the plan is to take a load of books back in order to do a swap.
The word that I most associate with Autumn is 'nesting'. The minute we hit September and the jumpers and boots hit the shelves and there are rumours of pumpkin spiced lattes in the air, I suddenly become even more of a home-body than I usually am. I like to be at home doing really domestic tasks which, perhaps oddly, help my imagination run wild and fuel up. I hope I'm not the only one who feels their creative imagination working whilst wearing a pair of marigolds and with a scrubber in hand!
Of course, Autumn wouldn't be Autumn without books. At the moment I'm in the mood for non-fiction and unputdownables. Something that'll keep me going long after my tea has gone cold. I've a few things up my sleeve.
What does Autumn mean to you?
I love fall (despite my seasonal allergies). It's a beautiful and exciting time of year. It signals the approach of the end of the year, but it's full of new beginnings, particularly for those of us who are returning to school or have children who are. Enjoy your sweater weather!
ReplyDeleteAutumn and Spring are my favourites. Winter is so urgh and the weather is usually awful and it rains continually whereas in Autumn you can go for long walks wrapped up in jumpers and boots and scarves and kick the leaves and then come back and drink hot chocolate and read books snuggled under a blanket. Yes. Also fireworks have got to be good. I love it because it stops being desperately hot and you've not yet got sick of it being cold. Plus when it's cold you can eat a lot of fish and chips without being judged.
ReplyDeleteI love everything from that list except the crisp morning runs. I do like crisp morning strolls though, so that'll have to do! I have a love/hate relationship with autumn. I mean, I do love it. I love the chill in the air and the clear cold days, I love bonfire toffee and apples, I love the back-to-school reading fever and digging out my biggest, cosiest jumpers... but I also find myself getting really lethargic on cold, foggy, drizzly days, which isn't always a good thing. Must learn to motivate myself right on through those ones, ha! Also spiders and wasps, which we all know are hell-sent to keep you feeling slightly itchy all the way through to winter. *eyes small spider in front of her and makes mental note to get rid of it before it turns into Aragog* HAPPY AUTUMN FELLOW ELLIE. May there be many pumpkin spiced lattes and few spider encounters ahead. :P
ReplyDeleteSince working in retail I've found autumn quite difficult because with it comes the stress of the pre-Christmas season, which starts in September. So I'm working hard to remind myself of all the things I love about autumn: jumpers, crunchy leaves underfoot, hot chocolate, board games, lazy evenings in with a book or a DVD and a fluffy blanket.
ReplyDeleteI feel the exact same way, even down to the room rearranging to fit in a desk! <3
ReplyDeleteIt's so good to know it's not just me! I hope you enjoyed your room rearranging :)
ReplyDeleteI can imagine it gets seriously hectic! I hope you find time to enjoy the best of autumn as some downtime from work :)
ReplyDeleteThere is also the getting up in the morning when it's still dark to contend with! I am not a fan of that. Or the spiders *shivers*. Happy autumn to you too :D
ReplyDeleteThe transitional months are by far the best, I completely agree :)
ReplyDeleteI love your approach to fall/autumn! I always think of it as a time for change, but never quite linked that with new beginnings. I think I'll be adjusting my thinking to include that.
